How Often to Water Your Lawn in Phoenix: A Season-by-Season Irrigation Guide

The most common irrigation mistake we see around Phoenix isn't a broken sprinkler. It's a controller that was set once, years ago, and never changed. Grass needs very different amounts of water in April than it does in June, and a schedule that ignores the seasons either wastes water or lets the lawn go brown.

In spring, Bermuda and other warm-season grasses are waking up and the soil still holds moisture from winter. One deep watering a week is usually plenty, and some weeks rain does the job for you. Watering too often now trains roots to stay shallow, which hurts when the desert heat arrives.

From May through September, most lawns need about an inch of water a week, split into two or three deeper cycles on your city's allowed watering days. Run zones early in the morning, before 8 a.m., so less is lost to evaporation in the desert sun and the grass dries off during the day. On our hard desert soil, use the cycle-and-soak setting: two or three shorter runs back to back let water sink in instead of running down the driveway.

In fall, cut back as temperatures drop, and by late November most lawns are dormant and need little more than an occasional drink during dry spells. Add a rain sensor so the system skips cycles on its own.

Finally, check coverage at least twice a year. Run each zone and watch where the water actually lands. A tilted head or a clogged nozzle can leave a dry patch that no amount of extra run time will fix. If you'd like us to walk the system with you, a seasonal tune-up is a quick visit.
